Cleaned and Restored Elgin A-11

Unrestored Bulova A-11

US Army Air Corps, or US Army Air Force A-11 Aircraft Clock. The standard aircraft clock for most WWII US Airframes, this clock was so plentiful that it was used in many vintage civilian planes constructed after WWII. The movement is a 22size, mechanical wind, 8-day movement. Makers which built the A-11 clock included Longines-Wittnauer, Elgin, Waltham and Bulova. Unfortunately, parts are not always interchangeable among these clocks, and some replacement parts are more readily available than others. These clocks commonly will require only cleaning to work well again. Please note our schedule of fees. Once we receive a clock, we require two weeks to evaluate it and determine what is required to restore it.

37500. Shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941, the Hamilton Watch Company, like many other manufacturers, turned their entire production facilities to the manufacture of highly specialized navigational timepieces and other precision instruments. However, The US Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics and the US Army Air Corps wanted two sources of supply which resulted in Hamilton's and Elgin's cooperative effort in designing an elapsed time clock.

The Elgin-Hamilton 8-day elapsed time clock was a 24-hour dial clock with special chronograph and civil date features designed for use as a navigational instrument in aircraft. The movement, rather than being that of as simple clock, was more like that of a large complicated, 8-day,16-jewel watch with a lever escapement. The primary differences between this instrument and an ordinary 12-hour dial watch were; 1)a somewhat more complex winding and setting mechanism; 2) two barrel mainspring assemblies instead of one; 3) the gear ratio between the cannon pinion, minute wheel and hour wheel rotates the hour hand once for every twenty-four revolutions, instead of the usual twelve; and 4) the addition of three specially designed chronograph, elapsed time, and civil date mechanisms on the front and rear plates.

The functional features of the elapsed time clock were; 1) a 24-hour dial; 2)the unusual combined winding and setting knob and the continuously running hour, minute, and second hands; 3)a chronograph system for measuring and recording short intervals of elapsed time; 4) an elapsed time mechanism entirely independent of the chronograph, for measuring long intervals of time (in both hours and minutes); and 5) a "civil date" mechanism with a calendar device for the consecutive indication of the civil date the passing of each 24 hours.

Case Disassembly and Evaluation for Cleaning/Repair plus shipping return: $50.00

Standard overhaul: $290.00

Mainspring replacement: $65.00

Balance Staff replacement: $50.00

Replace Glass and gaskets: $35.00

Refinish Dial and Hands: $250.00

**NOTE: Minimum charge for evaluating a clock is $50.00. This amount is deducted from your balance if you have your clock repaired and cleaned.

Seikosha Aircraft Clock. Seikosha was the ancestor company of today's Seiko. This aircraft clock was produced during WWII, and was the standard aircraft clock equipping WWII Japanese Combat Aircraft. Models were made for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Forces, as well as the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Fleets. This clock is commonly sought by collectors due to the many photos of WWII Japanese Kamikaze Pilots wearing this clock on a cord around their neck. A measure of this clock's popularity is the fact that it is being reproduced today. Originals unfortunately are rare, and spare parts for them are rarer. Expect 6 months or more for expert repair of this type of clock due to the requirement for manufacturing replacement parts. Specialty Item: contact us for details about repair.

919. What I believe is a WWII Waltham A-11 Clock. I cannot read the data plate because taped on the back was a very old hand-written note which says "B-17 Nancy Lou 17 Missions Germany". I found this clock at a gun show years ago. I have not been able to find the aircraft Nancy Lou, but suspect it was a late war aircraft, probably a B-17G. This clock is unrestored.
